Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Title:  Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Description:  I noticed this bridge about two years ago and thought that it resembled a B&O bridge, knowing that a rail line ran through here somewhere. The date on the keystone (which I didn't know was there until I downloaded the picture to my laptop!) confirms that this granite single-arch bridge was part of the B&O's Lancaster, Cecil & Southern branch, as the 4 1/2-mile line was built in 1892. This shot was taken from Leeds Road looking over the Little Elk Creek, which runs from right to left. The bridge crosses another stream which joins the creek here. The railroad used to run along the west bank of the Little Elk Creek, heading north (to the right in this picture) towards Providence Mills.

Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Title:  Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Description:  Looking north along the former roadbed from Leeds Road. The granite single-arch B&O bridge is straight ahead just behind the No Trespassing sign. Those cracks in the pavement of the road sure look like evidence of a former railroad crossing here. The Little Elk Creek can be seen to the right.

Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Title:  Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Description:  Looking south from Leeds Road along the former LC&S roadbed. The railroad engineers did an incredible job of building what appears to be a relatively mild grade up this valley along the creek. What doesn't show in these pictures are the significant ridges (for a railroad) on each side of the Little Elk Creek. There's those cracks in the pavement again, which look a lot like signs of a former railroad crossing here.

Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Title:  Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Description:  A closer view of the granite single-arch B&O bridge looking along the former roadbed. You can make out the top of each side of the bridge. The No Trespassing sign is keeping any closer views or any more shots along this stretch of the former railroad out of the question. Perhaps one day, I'll ask for permission (sure would be an easy mountain bike ride) to enter and see what else can be found. Supposedly a mile or two upstream there was two creek crossings by the railroad before it reached Providence Mills.

Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Title:  Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Description:  The patchy-looking pavement running straight ahead and through the chain link fence is along the former roadbed. The photographer is standing where the railroad used to cross Childs Road. The freight dock along the right side of the warehouse was very likely for loading to the railroad, based upon it's odd angle to the building (hard to see from here) and as there were several paper mills and other industries along the line. The railroad ran through where the chainlink gate in the right background of this picture is now, leading back toward the B&O mainline less than one mile mile away.

Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Title:  Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Description:  That's the CSX (ex-B&O) Philadelphia Subdivision crossing Blue Ball Road in Childs, Maryland. The former LC&S branch crossed Blue Ball Road on the remains of a trestle in the foreground. The junction of the mainline and the branch was to the right out of the picture.

Title:  Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Description:  The remains of one of the trestle piers of the LC&S branch's bridge over Blue Ball Road. Looking through the trees at right, you can see the CSX (ex-B&O) mainline crossing the Little Elk Creek on a plate girder bridge.

Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Title:  Remnants of the B&O LC&S Branch
Description:  Another pier of the former LC&S branch's trestle over Blue Ball Road. This one, however, is still standing. The first mile or so of the branch was still in operation (for just storage of freight cars more or less) as recently as the early 1970s.
